If you&#8217;re one of them and eager to <strong>escape the traditional<\/strong>, consider trekking to the lakes of Apu Ausangate or the <strong>Seven Lagoons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ausangate, <strong>the highest mountain in Cusco<\/strong> and the Vilcanota range (6,383 m), is a snow-capped giant revered since ancient times as the creator of water. Scattered across its territory is a <strong>chain of lagoons<\/strong> of various sizes, appearing like miracles thousands of metres above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These <strong>seven lagoons <\/strong>are reached on foot. During this <strong>full-day trek<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll feel like a pioneer or seasoned explorer. Step by step, you&#8217;ll embark on a thrilling adventure through a <strong>rolling mountainous landscape<\/strong>, home to alpacas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.es\/animales\/condor-andino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condors<\/a>, vizcachas, and other Andean wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Join us as we head towards the <strong>turquoise<\/strong>, blue, green, and red-hued lagoons that make up this <strong>12-kilometre<\/strong> circuit (about 3 hours of hiking). The drive to this rural community in the district of Ocongate (province of Quispicanchi) <strong>takes approximately 3 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pacchanta, nestled at the foot of the <strong>Ausangate glacier<\/strong>, is a strategic stop on this route. From here, you&#8217;ll begin your hike to the seven lagoons, but before setting off, <strong>you\u2019ll enjoy a hearty local breakfast<\/strong>, providing all the energy you need for high-altitude trekking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this key stop, your guide will provide essential information and tips to ensure a smooth journey. Remember, you don\u2019t need to leave Cusco with a heavy backpack. However, be sure to carry one or more bottles of water, extra warm clothing, a <strong>rain jacket, and sunscreen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From lagoon to lagoon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a happy heart and a full stomach (though not too full, as digestion is slower at altitude), you\u2019ll set off towards your seven destinations. The approximate <strong>departure time from Pacchanta is 8:30 a.m.<\/strong> From that moment on, the experiences you\u2019ll get convinced that choosing our tour was an excellent decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, don\u2019t let enthusiasm get the better of you. <strong>Walk cautiously<\/strong>, gauging how your body responds to the altitude and the challenge of the route. Bear in mind that the stretch to the first lagoon, <strong>Pucacocha (4,500 m a.s.l.)<\/strong>, is a demanding and challenging incline that <strong>you\u2019ll ascend in about one hour.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll reach Pucacocha, the \u201cred lagoon\u201d (so-called due to the hue of its waters),<strong> at around 9:30 a.m.<\/strong> or a little later. This will be your first sighting. Six more lagoons remain to be discovered, <strong>all relatively close<\/strong>, though at different altitudes. Exploring them will take <strong>approximately two hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order in which you\u2019ll visit the remaining lagoons is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Patacocha <\/strong>(4,620 m a.s.l.) with its crystal-clear waters; <strong>Alqacocha <\/strong>(4,650 m a.s.l.) offering beautiful views of the mountain range; and <strong>Qomercocha <\/strong>(4,655 m a.s.l.) with its green and turquoise hues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next two are named after <strong>the largest feline in the Amazon<\/strong>, the jaguar. The first one is a small one known as <strong>Orco Otorongo<\/strong> (4,620 m a.s.l.), and its name bears the shape and markings similar to a male jaguar, and the second one is known as <strong>China Otorongo<\/strong> (4,550 m a.s.l.) \u2014 it represents the female of this mythical creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before starting the return journey, you\u2019ll visit <strong>Azulcocha <\/strong>(4,500 m a.s.l.), the \u201cblue lagoon\u201d in English. After that, it\u2019s back to the community for <strong>lunch at 1:45 p.m.<\/strong> <strong>It wouldn\u2019t hurt to pick up the pace<\/strong> a little and eat a bit quicker than usual so you can unwind in <strong>the hot springs of Pacchanta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Optional Hot Springs Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019d like your tour to finish at <strong>around 3:30 p.m<\/strong>. with a relaxing soak in the warm waters of Pacchanta,<strong> it will depend on how quick you are<\/strong> \u2014 and the rest of the group \u2014 complete the route. If there are delays along the circuit, <strong>there may simply not be enough time left<\/strong> for the hot springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, <strong>this is not about \u201crushing\u201d<\/strong> or walking at a frantic pace. The main goal of the day is to enjoy and admire the seven lagoons. <strong>The hot springs are an optional extra<\/strong>. It\u2019s impossible for us to know each traveller\u2019s fitness level in advance or to predict unexpected situations along the way, such as sudden rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re an experienced hiker and prefer not to depend on the pace of others, we can offer private tours to the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate. However, whether you travel alone or in a group, it will still be essential to return to the community at the scheduled time \u2014 it\u2019s the only way you\u2019ll be able to enjoy a well-deserved dip in the hot springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Returning to Cusco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your group manages to enjoy some time at the hot springs, <strong>the return journey<\/strong> by road will begin at around <strong>4:30 p.m.<\/strong> In that case, our vehicle will arrive back in Cusco at approximately <strong>8:00 p.m<\/strong>.
