There\u2019s no hint of doubt in my voice. I\u2019m determined, even though that \u201clet\u2019s go\u201d means <strong>changing my plans<\/strong>. It\u2019s a risk. Perhaps the two places described with overflowing enthusiasm by an unexpected adventure partner will end up being a disappointment. Sometimes that happens. I know, <strong>but it\u2019s always worth letting curiosity lead the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what I\u2019ll do. I\u2019m leaving the picturesque village with its white houses and blue balconies. I\u2019m stepping away from the streets filled with masked dancers celebrating their faith. I cross a colonial stone bridge in search of my next destinations: <strong>\u201ctwo ruins that will leave you speechless,\u201d<\/strong> declared my new companion in the main square of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paucartambo.info\/informacion\/historia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Paucartambo<\/a> (3017 m a.s.l. ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or perhaps it was during breakfast with <strong>roasted pig<\/strong>, traditionally prepared by the local women outside the market, located along the road coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/why-to-visit-cusco\/\">Cusco<\/a> (about 110 km, 3 hours) and continuing on to Atalaya (in the Kos\u00f1ipata district). That\u2019s where the road ends. That\u2019s where the river journey begins for those venturing into the <strong>green heart of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s not get ahead of ourselves. All of that would happen after the \u201clet\u2019s go\u201d that would disrupt my itinerary. It often happens on journeys. It happens in Cusco and throughout Peru,<strong> where you\u2019re always recommended a somewhat hidden<\/strong>, less-promoted attraction, perhaps reserved for the more seasoned outsiders. Those who\u2014like you\u2014are willing to <strong>\u201cescape\u201d to other places.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paucartambo: Days of Celebration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Virgen.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Virgen.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Virgen-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Virgen-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was it in the square or the market? I can\u2019t quite remember, but what I won\u2019t forget are all the experiences I had in Paucartambo, accompanying the dancers during the <a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-virgen-del-carmen-paucartambo-cuando-y-como-se-celebra-esta-festividad-cusco-991805.aspx\">Mamacha Carmen festival<\/a>; waiting for dawn at the Tres Cruces de Oro viewpoint; getting to know the Cusco side of Manu, and being amazed by the <strong>chullpas of Ninamarca<\/strong> and the <strong>stone enclosures of Watoqto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aren\u2019t my only memories. Paucartambo, the capital of the province of the same name, is etched in my mind. Its urban area\u2014serene and sleepy for most of the year\u2014<strong>comes alive with faith, music, and dance from July 15 to 18<\/strong>. It\u2019s the celebration of the Virgin of Carmen. Fireworks. Sermons, prayers, miracles, and processions. Devotees dance in the square, in the streets, and<strong> even in the cemetery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chuncho.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chuncho.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chuncho-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chuncho-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to be there to understand it. You have to be there to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rollyvaldivia\/248618094\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the saqras<\/a> (devils) <strong>tempting the Virgin from the balconies<\/strong> and rooftops. You have to be there, always alert, to <strong>avoid the whips <\/strong>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpakita.com\/paucartambo-maqta-fotos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">maqt\u2019as<\/a>. They represent the young farmers. They are both jokers and stern. They play with the audience but will punish you if you block the dancers\u2019 path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days of processions\u2014the Mamacha crossing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/paucartambopuntocom\/posts\/el-puente-carlos-iii-en-paucartambo-inicia-su-construcci%C3%B3n-en-1775-y-culmina-su-\/736542321947042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">colonial bridge, Rey Carlos III<\/a>, which \u2018flies\u2019 over the Mapacho River\u2014days filled with folkloric scenes\u201419 different <a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-virgen-paucartambo-estas-danzas-rinden-homenaje-a-mamacha-del-carmen-758250.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">groups<\/a> dancing for the Virgin\u2014and the \u2018guerrilla\u2019\u2014<strong>the struggle between the qhapaq qolla<\/strong> (highland merchants) and the qhapaq chunchos (jungle warriors) for possession of the miraculous image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Viewpoint of the Three Suns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/trescruces.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/trescruces.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/trescruces-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/trescruces-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chunchos are the victors, while the qollas are taken to \u2018hell\u2019 by the saqras in carts with wheels engulfed in flames. This is how a \u2018guerrilla\u2019 ends, symbolically revealing Paucartambo\u2019s geographical <strong>position as a transitional zone between the Andes and the Amazon<\/strong>, between the mountains and the forest, between the<strong> regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The landscape, climate, and even the scent of the wind change. The mountains shrink until they disappear, <strong>and the vegetation overflows<\/strong>; thus, the journey that began on a bus departing from the Cusco district of <strong>San Jer\u00f3nimo (heading to the province of Paucartambo)<\/strong> would transform into a patronal festival, a discovery in Ninamarca and Watoqto, and a moment of contemplation at <a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/turismo\/2023\/12\/18\/como-llegar-a-tres-cruces-el-mirador-que-tiene-la-mejor-vista-en-peru-paucartambo-cusco-atmp-1179774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">dawn in Tres Cruces de Oro<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Guerrilla-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Guerrilla-1.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Guerrilla-1-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Guerrilla-1-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waking up early (<strong>at 2 a.m.<\/strong>). Bundling up well to withstand the cold of a viewpoint that sits above <strong>3700 m a.s.l.<\/strong> Heading out into the streets to find the rented vehicle from the day before at the <strong>Paucartambo bus terminal<\/strong>, as there\u2019s no public transport to the lookout for magical sunrises where <strong>the sun rises over the Amazon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ninety minutes of travel along <strong>the road to Manu<\/strong>. Arriving and waiting. It\u2019s cold, very cold, but the anticipation and hope for a clear sunrise help endure the low temperatures. And you check the clock: <strong>4:30 a.m., the time<\/strong> for the display of lights and shadows, halos and glows, to begin at what is also known as the <strong>&#8220;Balcony of the East.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On the route to Manu<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are few places in the world where the <strong>phenomenon known as the &#8220;white lightning&#8221;<\/strong> occurs. Tres Cruces is one of them, and you can witness it in Peru, in Cusco, along the route and at the borders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/sernanp\/informes-publicaciones\/1948163-parque-nacional-del-manu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Manu Biosphere Reserve and National Park<\/a>, with its highlands, mountains, cloud forests, and Amazonian plains. Its vastness is the ancestral territory of native peoples and a refuge for<strong> uncontacted Indigenous groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to immerse yourself in a green world of gigantic trees, mighty rivers, and cochas (lagoons) taken from paradise, Manu is waiting for you.<strong> You can reach Atalaya<\/strong> by road on your own, but if you want to go further,<strong> hire the services of a specialized operator<\/strong> in Cusco. They will offer you<strong> tours ranging from four to eight days<\/strong> of adventure, exploration, and a closer connection to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu2.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu2-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Manu2-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigating by boat and canoe, <strong>watching the mountains fade away<\/strong>, walking along muddy trails, and <strong>sleeping in tents<\/strong>, rustic lodges, or simple platforms. Sharpening your gaze to spot some of the 160 species of mammals, <strong>1000 species of birds<\/strong>, 50 species of snakes, 140 species of amphibians, and <strong>30 million species of insects <\/strong>recorded in this planet&#8217;s lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before all that, it\u2019s a great idea to take in the panoramic sunrise from the Tres Cruces de Oro viewpoint, where the cold will soon be forgotten when <strong>three suns appear in the sky<\/strong>. Upon seeing them, you might think it\u2019s an illusion or a dream\u2014never a nightmare\u2014because this distortion created by the interplay of light and the humid sky<strong> is so beautiful that it feels unreal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ninamarca: Pre-Hispanic Chullpas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Ninamarca.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Ninamarca.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Ninamarca-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Ninamarca-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every day do you witness the spectacle of repeated suns (<strong>May and June are the ideal months<\/strong>). Not every day do I say \u2018let\u2019s go\u2019 and head out to the <strong>chullpas that I only glimpsed <\/strong>between yawns from the window of the bus that took me to Paucartambo (costing between 40 to 60 soles from Cusco). Not every day do I listen to a stranger and accompany them to an <strong>archaeological site that I &#8220;mostly didn\u2019t know about,<\/strong>&#8221; as they say in Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paucartambo.info\/turismo\/chullpas-de-ninamarca.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ninamarca<\/a> (3690 m a.s.l.) is the name of the <strong>twenty or so circular chullpas <\/strong>perched on a small hill at <strong>kilometer 83 of the Cusco-Paucartambo road<\/strong>. Built by the <strong>Lupacas<\/strong> (a pre-Inca culture) for the eternal rest of their dignitaries, these stone structures, reaching up to 2.5 meters in height, have the majestic<strong> silhouette of the snow-capped Pitusiray<\/strong> as their natural backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/chullpa.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/chullpa.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/chullpa-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/chullpa-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good call. My new companion hadn&#8217;t lied. <strong>Ninamarca was an excellent getaway<\/strong>. My \u2018let\u2019s go\u2019 had been a success so far. Would it continue to be so in Watoqto? Soon I would find out. I returned to the road, to the rented vehicle that would take me to a small village and an archaeological site on the banks of the Mapacho River, which most tourists overlook in their rush to reach Manu or return to Cusco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we continue, let me propose a pause to explain the itinerary. Paucartambo was the starting point, Ninamarca (on the road to Cusco) the first stop. From there, the vehicle would turn back in search of the turnoff to <strong>Watoqto (18 km from the centre of Paucartambo)<\/strong>, the gateway to Antisuyo (one of the four regions of the Inca Empire) and the areas of production for <a href=\"https:\/\/historia.nationalgeographic.com.es\/a\/coca-planta-sagrada-antiguos-incas_18363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the sacred coca leaf.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Watoqto: Inca Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enough explanations. I arrived, we arrived.<strong> An imposing stone entrance <\/strong>welcomes us to a refuge from the past, to an Inca structure restored to<strong> reclaim its essence, grandeur, and stony beauty<\/strong>. My &#8216;partner&#8217; smiles with satisfaction. He didn\u2019t lie in the square or outside the market, and he was right when he said<strong> I would be left speechless <\/strong>by the recommended places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had been here before and wanted to return; that\u2019s what he told me when he suggested we go together. Now I understand why, because even without leaving Watoqto (2930 m a.s.l.)\u2014with its administrative enclosures, its rectangular temple, and its views of the river\u2014<strong>I feel the traveler&#8217;s call to return<\/strong> and photograph its<strong> five-meter walls<\/strong>, trapezoidal niches, and double-jamb doors once more.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto2.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto2-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Watoqto2-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Paucartambo, Cusco, Peru, awaits <\/strong>you to join the dancers who worship a virgin, to challenge the cold at<strong> a viewpoint where the sun triples<\/strong>, to embark on jungle excursions feeling like a pioneer, and to dare to seek cultural, archaeological, and natural attractions <strong>off the beaten path.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I return to the village. I hear the music of the bands and the blast of a firecracker. I bid farewell and thank my unexpected &#8216;partner.&#8217; <strong>The festival is reborn.<\/strong> I escape from the jokes and whips of the maqt\u2019as. I approach the church. <strong>The Virgin is in the atrium<\/strong>, guarded by her &#8216;favoured ones,&#8217; the qhapaq chunchos. I see her and softly ask<strong> her to allow me to return<\/strong>. I know she will grant it.
