Everything changes in just a few hours. <strong>Everything is different when you step off the bus:<\/strong> the landscape, the customs, the climate,<strong> and even the way people speak and dress<\/strong>. Here, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapfre.com.pe\/viviendo-en-confianza\/salud\/prevenir-tratar-soroche-mal-de-altura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">altitude sickness<\/a> is no longer a threat, and the highland wind (<em>wayra<\/em>) is just a gentle breeze. Here, the <em>Inti<\/em> (sun) of the mountains sets into the ocean&#8217;s horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From the Andean Peru to Coastal Peru<\/strong>. From Cusco at 3,400 m a.s.l. to the proud city of Arequipa (2,335 m a.s.l.), a <strong>region renowned for its volcanoes and canyons<\/strong>, its sillar architecture, and the flavours of its <a href=\"https:\/\/sociedadpicanteradearequipa.pe\/picanteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">picanter\u00edas<\/a>. Also known for the graceful stride of its vicu\u00f1as and the soaring <strong>flight of its condors.<\/strong> These are the attractions that draw the majority of tourists, but none of them will be described in this text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We&#8217;re heading to the sea from Cusco.<\/strong> Join me on this getaway that will give a new twist to your Andean holiday. Because Peru is <strong>not just mountains and plains.<\/strong> It is so much more. <strong>It is sand, waves, and coastal relaxation<\/strong>. It\u2019s sailing to hidden beaches while watching birds, dolphins, and sea lions. It\u2019s spicy ceviche, battered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asturnatura.com\/temarios\/biologia\/mariscos\/gasteropodos-lapas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lapas<\/a>, and seafood stew in the coastal <strong>provinces of Caman\u00e1 and Islay.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <strong>Arequipa without volcanoes<\/strong>, but with<strong> cliffs and coves<\/strong>, where the demanding hikes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colcaperu.gob.pe\/destinos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Colca<\/a> and Cotahuasi canyons turn into laid-back strolls along the sands of El Chorro, La Punta, Catarindo, Mollendo, and Mej\u00eda. How does that sound? Tempting, isn\u2019t it? It calls to you. <strong>You might take a day or two of your holiday<\/strong> to enjoy Mama Cocha in Arequipa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your answer is yes, <strong>this text will serve as your guide <\/strong>for both winter and summer. If you\u2019re unsure, I\u2019ll <strong>try to persuade<\/strong> you with my words and images. And if you\u2019re convinced that you won\u2019t go&#8230; well, that\u2019s fine too! You\u2019re still welcome to read on. After all, life and travel take unexpected turns, and it\u2019s well known that you should <strong>never say never.<\/strong> We\u2019re heading to the sea.<strong> See you by the sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To refresh yourself in the ocean<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/costanera.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/costanera.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/costanera-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/costanera-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By air or by land? <strong>Save time or save money?<\/strong> That\u2019s the dilemma you\u2019ll need to solve before embarking on your getaway. If your schedule is tight, the best option is to <strong>fly from Cusco to Arequipa<\/strong> (1 hour 30 minutes, approximately 240 soles); but if your credit cards are near their limit,<strong> get ready to travel 485 kilometres<\/strong> by road, taking roughly <strong>10 hours <\/strong>(cost: 75 to 115 soles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you choose the budget-friendly option, you\u2019ll board the bus at the <strong>Cusco bus terminal<\/strong> (Avenida V\u00eda de Evitamiento 429). Night departures (<strong>between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.<\/strong>) are excellent alternatives, as they not only save you a night\u2019s accommodation, but <strong>you\u2019ll also arrive early at Arequipa\u2019s bus or land terminal<\/strong>, where buses to the coastal provinces depart (there are also shared taxis that leave from their own designated stops).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flights depart in the mornings and afternoons from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeropuertos.net\/aeropuerto-internacional-alejandro-velasco-astete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport<\/a> and land at <a href=\"https:\/\/aap.com.pe\/sedes\/arequipa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alfredo Rodr\u00edguez Ball\u00f3n International Airport.<\/a> If your plan is to head straight to the sea and the waves of the Caman\u00e1 or Islay provinces, <strong>take a taxi to the terminal or land terminal <\/strong>(<strong>11 km, 30 minutes, costing between 30 to 40 soles<\/strong>)<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sombras.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sombras.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sombras-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sombras-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At last, the ocean is getting closer. You get to choose whether to head to<strong> Caman\u00e1<\/strong> (3 hours, 40 soles) or <strong>Mollendo<\/strong> (<strong>2 hours 30 minutes, 20 soles<\/strong>, approximate price), the two beach destinations most frequented by people from Arequipa. A word of caution: in summer,<strong> avoid travelling to the coast on weekends. <\/strong>The beaches get crowded, <strong>making it hard to fully enjoy<\/strong> the natural beauty and tourist services in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Monday to Friday, the crowds are smaller (hotels will have rooms available, and prices will drop).<strong> Fewer people means more enjoyment.<\/strong> If you&#8217;re looking to fully relax and have several days to spare, <strong>it\u2019s a great idea to head to Caman\u00e1<\/strong> and, from there, t<strong>ake a scenic coastal drive along the Costanera<\/strong>, a paved road that hugs the Pacific coast all the way to the neighbouring regions of <strong>Moquegua and Tacna<\/strong> (the border with Chile).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adventure at Sea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Kayak.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Kayak.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Kayak-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Kayak-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wild beach or a serene cove. A lively, festive resort in the summer or a clear, solitary shoreline year-round. A day of relaxation on the sand under a protective umbrella or an<strong> intense journey to a marine reserve <\/strong>with extraordinary views. What will you do? Which option will you choose? <strong>What will your &#8220;sea menu&#8221; be along the coast of Arequipa?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The options are wide and varied. In Caman\u00e1, the beaches of <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=12828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">La Punta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=12828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">El Chorro<\/a> are the most popular due to their proximity to the urban area. Very lively on hot days,<strong> they\u2019re perfect if you enjoy movement<\/strong>, excitement, and a bustling atmosphere. If you prefer quieter spaces where you can connect with nature, <strong>your place is Quilca<\/strong>, a district and artisanal port located <strong>40 km to the south.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tucked away between some cliffs, it is said that in this port Admiral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esffaa.edu.pe\/270724-grau\/\">Miguel Grau<\/a> hid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-america-latina-49968056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hu\u00e1scar<\/a>, <strong>the legendary monitor <\/strong>ship he commanded during the <a href=\"https:\/\/historiaperuana.pe\/periodo-independiente\/republica\/guerra-peru-chile-del-pacifico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">War of the Pacific<\/a> (1879\u20131883). The exploits of this modest vessel caused alarm in <strong>the powerful Chilean navy<\/strong>, until the ship was captured by the enemy during the <strong>Battle of Angamos <\/strong>on October 8, 1879.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Lobo.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Lobo.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Lobo-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Lobo-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth or myth, what\u2019s certain is that Quilca is the perfect place to <strong>set sail towards a series of coves<\/strong>, such as San Jos\u00e9 (where there\u2019s a lodge), La Francesa, Honoratos, and Arantas, among others. Also towards <strong>Punta Hornillo<\/strong>s, a fantastic marine spot that is part of the nationa<strong>l reserve Sistemas de Islas, Islotes y Punta Guaneras<\/strong>, created to protect the biological diversity and ecosystems of the Peruvian coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailing. Feeling the gentle sway of the Pacific. <strong>Watching dolphins play<\/strong>. Dropping anchor in the coves. Exploring. <strong>Swimming in calm, wave-free waters<\/strong>. Returning to sea in search of rocky outcrops and a small island. Time to contemplate sea lions, <strong>Humboldt penguins<\/strong>, cormorants, pelicans, seagulls, and terns, just to name a few species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Quilca to Mollendo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Catarindo.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Catarindo.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Catarindo-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Catarindo-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return to Quilca. A new dilemma: go back to Caman\u00e1 and try the flavours of the artisanal port, or <strong>continue along the Costanera towards Matarani and Mollendo<\/strong> (in the province of Islay). Patience. No rush. The best thing is to have lunch first. <strong>Enjoy some marine cuisine with fresh fish and seafood.<\/strong> A festival of flavours with signature dishes such as ceviche, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.es\/recetasderechupete\/parihuela-sopa-de-pescado-y-marisco-peruana\/23671\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">parihuela<\/a>, jalea, or chicharr\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, ready to continue the journey; but before you set off, let me offer a recommendation: if you want everything to be more relaxed, <strong>hire the services of a local operator<\/strong> or rent a vehicle. <strong>That way, you\u2019ll avoid waiting<\/strong> and the hassle of getting on and off public transport. Now that that\u2019s clear, it\u2019s good to know<strong> that Quilca and Mollendo are 73 km<\/strong> apart (around 1 hour 30 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ceviche.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ceviche.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ceviche-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ceviche-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On your way to your final destination, <strong>the road crosses the district of Islay<\/strong>, home to <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.mtc.gob.pe\/transportes\/concesiones\/infraestructura_portuaria\/puerto_matarani.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Matarani, Arequipa\u2019s main port<\/a>. If your itinerary allows, make a stop to take in the coastal panorama and the <a href=\"https:\/\/percyeguiluz.blogspot.com\/2017\/09\/las-islas-alvizuri-en-la-historia-de.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Albizuri Islands<\/a> from the lighthouse. Just like in Quilca, from the private Oc\u00e9ano Seafood dock, you&#8217;ll find boats <strong>departing for the coves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distance between the district of Islay and the<strong> bustling port of Mollendo<\/strong> is 14 kilometres. Before you get there, take a detour to the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=10927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">caleta Catarindo.<\/a> This hidden beach with calm waters is one of the most popular for its scenic beauty. <strong>Along its shores, you&#8217;ll find restaurants<\/strong> and even accommodation. Here, be sure to try the creamy <a href=\"https:\/\/trome.com\/actualidad\/huariques-arequipa-perol-mollendo-dona-luzmila-video-fotos-45931\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">perol de mariscos<\/a> (seafood stew). You\u2019ll love it!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Mollendo.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Mollendo.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Mollendo-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Mollendo-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once in Mollendo, <strong>explore its streets<\/strong>, its plazas \u2014Grau and Bolognesi\u2014, the old train station \u2014now a cultural centre\u2014 and the Ratti promenade. <strong>You\u2019ll be left in awe by its colonial-era mansions<\/strong>, which give the town a charm of an old port. Many of these buildings are<strong> true architectural monuments <\/strong>from a time that has passed, but which must be preserved, standing strong against the passage of time and the <strong>misunderstood rush of modernity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Of Lagoons and Birds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/buho.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/buho.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/buho-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/buho-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like in Caman\u00e1, Mollendo is<strong> crowded with tourists<\/strong> on summer weekends. <strong>The First, Second, and Third beaches <\/strong>are the most popular. This coastal area features a scenic promenade, and perched atop a hill is the <a href=\"https:\/\/munimollendo.gob.pe\/castillo-forga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Forga Castle<\/a>. Built between 1908 and 1910, it is the symbol of the city. While <strong>its state of preservation is poor<\/strong>, it continues to attract the interest of both locals and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, your journey shouldn\u2019t end in Mollendo, the &#8220;<strong>Puerto Bravo<\/strong>,&#8221; so named for the power of its waves. Get your binoculars ready to spot <em>zambullidores<\/em> (divers), herons, seagulls, peregrine falcons, and <em>huerequeques<\/em> (a type of owl), among just some of the <strong>211 species recorded, <\/strong>both resident and migratory. (<strong>Entry fee: 30 soles for foreigners, 15 soles for nationals<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The birds <strong>fly, the hours and days fly by in front of the sea<\/strong>. They\u2019ll stay with you, always<strong> motivating you to return<\/strong> to the beaches, the coves, and the fishing villages of a coastline that is breathtaking, whether bathed in sunlight or shrouded in mist.
