The classic. The traditional. The essential. But not the only thing. There is <strong>so much more to see<\/strong> and explore in the \u201cnavel of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should you do? <strong>Spend your entire holiday in Cusco<\/strong>, or set off to other destinations? That\u2019s the dilemma and the travel question you\u2019ll need to answer when planning your journey. If you choose to stay, you\u2019ll have a rich and varied menu of options, <strong>including itineraries full of archaeology,<\/strong> nature and living culture, as well as <strong>routes \u201cspiced\u201d with plenty of adrenaline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s so much to see and experience that <strong>you\u2019ll want to stay a few extra days<\/strong> to hike to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/articles\/cyrjey50pe5o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Choquequirao archaeological park<\/a> (4d\/3n) or <strong>navigate the Mainique Pongo<\/strong>, where cliffs hem in the Urubamba River. Three kilometres where the river narrows to just 45 metres, <strong>three kilometres of rapids<\/strong> and impetuous waterfalls, <strong>three kilometres of pure action and adventure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0552-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0552-1.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0552-1-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0552-1-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0552-1-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you love the mountains, <a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/sociedad\/2025\/09\/23\/el-glaciar-tropical-mas-grande-del-mundo-esta-en-peru-y-se-ha-estado-derritiendo-a-un-ritmo-acelerado-desde-1970-segun-inaigem-esta-ubicado-entre-puno-y-cusco-evat-1832893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">escape to Quelccaya,<\/a> <strong>the largest tropical glacier in the world<\/strong>. If you prefer forests and biodiversity, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/manu-adventure-in-the-peruvian-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manu National Park<\/a>. If you want to get even closer to the past and pre-Hispanic architecture, <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/cusco-waqrapukara-fortress-of-the-horn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waqrapukara is a great destination<\/a>; and if colonial religious art fascinates you, explore the temples along the Andean Barraco Route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The menu is even broader<\/strong>, but I don\u2019t want to \u201coverwhelm\u201d you. And, even if it doesn\u2019t seem like it, this text isn\u2019t meant to persuade you to spend your entire holiday in Cusco. Quite the opposite. The intention was \u2013 and still is, I can adjust my words if needed \u2013 to <strong>encourage you to venture out to other regions,<\/strong> cities and towns, despite the many charms of <strong>Peru\u2019s main tourist destination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Cusco to Other Destinations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0054.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0054.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0054-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0054-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0054-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the purpose of this story clarified, it\u2019s worth mentioning that from the ancient Inca capital you can <strong>travel by road<\/strong> to several regional capitals, such as <strong>Abancay, Arequipa, Puno and Puerto Maldonado<\/strong>. Buses run daily at various times, departing from the <strong>city\u2019s bus terminal<\/strong> located in the Santiago district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Abancay, the capital of the Apur\u00edmac region, you\u2019ll find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/sernanp\/informes-publicaciones\/1928581-santuario-nacional-de-ampay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ampay National Sanctuary<\/a>, a protected area with snow-capped mountains, lagoons and<strong> intimpas (the \u201csun trees\u201d)<\/strong>, an endemic species of the Andes. Other options include Cachora, the village where<strong> the trail to Choquequirao and the Apur\u00edmac Canyon begins<\/strong>. For lunch, try the <strong>tallar\u00edn de casa con gallina<\/strong> (homemade noodles with chicken). (Travel time: 6 h. Ticket: 50 soles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to have  <strong>an experience in<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/arequipa-route-of-the-sillar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arequipa<\/a>, the capital of the region with the same name, is your destination. Not only for its Historic Centre, <strong>famous picanter\u00edas<\/strong> (temples of traditional cuisine), and striking volcanoes, but also for the <strong>Colca and Cotahuasi Canyons<\/strong>, two of the deepest in the world. (Travel time: 10 h. Ticket: 75 soles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC1882.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC1882.webp 864w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC1882-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC1882-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But since not everything in Peru is about altitude and depth, <strong>head towards the lush biodiversity of Puerto Maldonado<\/strong>, the capital of the Madre de Dios region. This city is the starting point for tours to the <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/tambopata-adventures-in-the-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tambopata National Reserve<\/a>. Navigating rivers and lagoons and walking along muddy trails <strong>will bring you close to the Amazon\u2019s flora and fauna<\/strong>. Nature at its finest. (Travel time: 10 h. Ticket: 70 soles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, I know, <strong>there\u2019s still one destination missing: Puno<\/strong>, the capital of the region with the same name. Patience. This text isn\u2019t over yet. There\u2019s still time and space to write about the \u201cAltiplano City\u201d (3,827 m \/ 12,549 ft) and <strong>Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world<\/strong>. Not only that, we\u2019ll tell you about the devils of the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria and the <strong>chullpas (funerary monuments)<\/strong> built by ancient peoples. If you want to know more, keep reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Route of the Sun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0155-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0155-1.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0155-1-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0155-1-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0155-1-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You travel, observe, and walk. <strong>You climb and descend in strategic<\/strong>, breathtaking spots. You admire the <strong>religious art of a colonial church<\/strong> and the stone architecture of an archaeological site. You feel the challenges of high altitude at an <strong>Andean pass that is both an end and a beginning<\/strong>. And at the last stop, you stand in awe, trying to interpret the <strong>mythical carvings<\/strong> of monoliths from an ancient people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, between stops and discoveries, learning and smiles, <strong>you leave urban Cusco behind<\/strong> along the <strong>Route of the Sun<\/strong>, a tourist route that turns the 386 km journey to Puno into <strong>a full-day adventure<\/strong>. Highlights include a visit to the colonial San Pedro de Andahuaylillas Church, the <strong>\u201cSistine Chapel of the Americas,\u201d<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Raqchi Archaeological Park<\/a>, where the Incas worshipped Viracocha, <strong>the creator of all things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its 14-metre-high stone and adobe walls and <strong>cylindrical columns<\/strong> with solid stone bases reveal the<strong> importance of this temple <\/strong>and military garrison, built in the 15th century. Raqchi will amaze you. <strong>Here, you symbolically say goodbye to archaeological Cusco<\/strong> as you head towards Puno. Soon, you\u2019ll reach <strong>La Raya<\/strong>, the high-altitude pass at <strong>4,335 m<\/strong> \/ 14,232 ft, marking the regional boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC2320.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC2320.webp 864w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC2320-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC2320-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cusco and Puno lie in this landscape of <strong>ichu grass<\/strong> (high-altitude pasture) and mountains painted on the horizon. It\u2019s hard not to think that, according to legend, the founders of the Inca Empire, <strong>Manco C\u00e1pac<\/strong> and <strong>Mama Ocllo<\/strong>, emerged from the waters of <strong>Lake Titicaca<\/strong>. In a way, your journey becomes a trip to the roots and origins of the <strong>Tawantinsuyu<\/strong>, the largest state structure in South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Route of the Sun<\/strong>, operated by tourist buses departing from Cusco and Puno <em>(Travel time: 10 h, Ticket: 50 soles)<\/em>, continues with a visit to the <strong>Pukara Lithic Museum<\/strong>, where monoliths and stelae featuring anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and geometric figures are displayed. These were created by the <strong>Pukara<\/strong>, a pre-Inca people who developed in the Peruvian and Bolivian highlands between 500 and 380 BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The City of Titicaca<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC5490.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC5490.webp 864w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC5490-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC5490-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunset marks the end of the Route of the Sun. Night falls in <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/puno-aventuras-en-el-lago-titicaca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Puno<\/a>, the <strong>\u201cFolkloric Capital of Peru,\u201d<\/strong> which in February comes alive with faith, music and dance to <strong>honour the Virgin of Candelaria<\/strong>. During these festival days, the city is taken over by <strong>troops of dancing devils<\/strong>, who are confronted by the brave Archangel Michael, sword in hand, trying to guide the forces of evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/cultura\/noticias\/523370-ministerio-de-cultura-declara-patrimonio-cultural-de-la-nacion-a-la-danza-diablada-punena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Diablada<\/a> is one of the main dances of the festival, c<a href=\"https:\/\/ich.unesco.org\/es\/RL\/la-fiesta-de-la-virgen-de-la-candelaria-en-puno-00956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">elebrating the beloved image of Mamita or Mamacha Candelaria<\/a>, which is brought out to the atrium of San Juan Bautista Church, her sanctuary, to witness the <strong>parade of saya and morenada<\/strong> ensembles, caporales, llameradas, and more. You\u2019ll also hear the <strong>vibrant panpipes<\/strong> of the sicuri troops. Thousands of devotees from the city and countryside fill the streets with energy and colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Puno is not just about faith, festivals and folklore. <strong>Puno is also Lake Titicaca<\/strong>, the great lake shared by Peru and Bolivia. Dare to sail its mythical waters and land on the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">floating islands of the Uros<\/a>, built or woven from totora reeds by the descendants of an ancient people. If you love immersive cultural experiences, <strong>you must visit Taquile or Amantan\u00ed<\/strong>\u2026 better yet, both!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0017.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0017.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0017-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0017-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0017-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Life in community<\/strong> among terraces and breathtaking views of Lake Titicaca. On these islands, the saying <strong>\u201ctoday for me, tomorrow for you\u201d<\/strong> isn\u2019t empty words. It\u2019s applied. It\u2019s alive. It\u2019s the key to harmonious living. The islanders say they learned it from their ancestors. But that\u2019s not all. <strong>Their forebears taught them how to work the land<\/strong>, respect nature and the lake, and express their worldview, <strong>beliefs and customs through their weaving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beliefs and visions that go far beyond earthly existence, as you\u2019ll realise at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lanoticia.com.pe\/las-asombrosas-chullpas-de-sillustani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sillustani chullpas<\/a>, funerary towers up to <strong>12 metres high<\/strong>, originally built by <strong>the Aymara Colla kingdom<\/strong> (1150\u20131477 AD). They believed that these <strong>enormous stone towers<\/strong> \u2013 though some are rectangular \u2013 would help their leaders journey into eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You see, <strong>tourist Peru doesn\u2019t begin or end in Cusco<\/strong>. Pack your bag and escape to nearby cities and destinations. You won\u2019t regret it.
