How could he have imagined that his promising and glorious destiny would be cut short by the fear of his own brothers? It was they who <strong>chose to imprison him in that dark cave<\/strong>, where he would await death with no hope of ever reaching the longed-for eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To think that at the beginning of his journey he had been so sure he would be remembered as one of <strong>the mythical founders of a city<\/strong>, of a civilisation, of a vast empire. But now, he weeps in fury upon realising that <strong>his prodigious strength is useless to set him free<\/strong>. Then he wonders if, in the centuries to come, anyone will remember his name, his life, and <strong>the disgrace of which he was a victim<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desolate, he tries to convince himself that <strong>his splendid father will help him escape<\/strong> his confinement. If that were to happen, he would return victorious to the <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/cusco-waqrapukara-fortress-of-the-horn\/\">mountain paths<\/a> to <strong>create more valleys and ravines<\/strong>. It was all so simple \u2014 all he had to do was throw a stone. Terrified by his power to shape the land itself, <strong>his brothers decided to get rid of him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1093.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1093.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1093-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1093-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1093-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It isn\u2019t fair.<\/em> <em><strong>They will carry out your command<\/strong> while I remain trapped here,<\/em> he said between sobs, hoping his father would listen. He was wrong. <strong>His words were ignored<\/strong>. Perhaps his true fate was imprisonment, and the promise of founding an empire was nothing but a cruel deception. Or maybe it was <strong>his tears that sealed his doom<\/strong> \u2014 for the founder of a civilisation was not meant to break so easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sorry, I don\u2019t have the answer, and I don\u2019t know where to find it. <strong>I am not Ayar Cachi<\/strong>, the Son of the Sun, <strong>who was locked away in a cave by his own brothers<\/strong>. In that moment of betrayal, no one could have imagined that his <strong>tears \u2014 filled with despair<\/strong>, helplessness, and burning rage \u2014 would give birth to<strong> thousands of saltwater pools<\/strong> at the foot of Mount Qaqa Wi\u00f1ay, the \u201c<strong>eternal rock<\/strong>\u201d, or as it is known in English, \u201c<strong>the stone that grows<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Legend of the Ayar Brothers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1180.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1180.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1180-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1180-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1180-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Salt with a Taste of Legend<\/strong> in Maras, a place steeped in myth and history, said to have been born from the <strong>tears of Ayar Cachi<\/strong>, the son of the Sun. Together with his three brothers, their wives, and ten families, Ayar Cachi <strong>emerged from Mount Tamputoco<\/strong>, also known as the <strong>Cave of Pacaritambo<\/strong> (\u201cthe place of dawn\u201d in Spanish), with a divine mission \u2014 to find <strong>a fertile valley where they could settle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, they were to <strong>lay the foundations of a city<\/strong>, a civilisation, an empire. That was the command they received from Inti, their father, the Sun, after a great and devastating flood. <strong>Yet their destiny was uncertain<\/strong>, and questions filled their minds. Which direction should they take? How long would their journey last? And where would the golden staff, given to <strong>Ayar Manco, their leader<\/strong>, finally sink into the earth as a sign of their promised land<strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their pilgrimage was marked by fear, suspicion, and tragedy. Everything began to spiral out of control when Ayar Manco, Ayar Cucho, and Ayar Auca conspired against their elder brother, Ayar Cachi \u2014 whose name means \u201c<strong>brother or ancestor of salt<\/strong>\u201d in English. They feared his strength and power. <strong>They asked him to enter a cave<\/strong> to retrieve sacred objects. He trusted them. He shouldn\u2019t have. <strong>It was all a cruel deception<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1198.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1198.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1198-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1198-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1198-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened next \u2014 the confinement, the despair, the fury, and the tears \u2014 I\u2019ve already recreated with a bit of creative licence at the beginning of this text. What I didn\u2019t tell you, and perhaps you didn\u2019t know, is that <strong>Ayar Uchu<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>the chilli brother<\/strong>\u201d) was turned into stone on Mount Huanacauri. A similar fate befell <strong>Ayar Auca<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>the brother who flew<\/strong>\u201d), except that he grew wings and soared towards the Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one who remained on Earth was <strong>Ayar Manco<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>the brother or ancestor of quinoa<\/strong>\u201d). <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/cusco-plaza-de-armas-historical-center\/\">He would go on to found Cusco<\/a>, <strong>becoming the first Inca<\/strong>. He taught men how to farm, build, and organise their communities, while his companion Mama Ocllo instructed women in the art of weaving and household tasks. That\u2019s how <a href=\"https:\/\/pueblosoriginarios.com\/sur\/andina\/inca\/ayar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the legend<\/a> goes \u2014 <strong>the one I learned at school<\/strong>, and the one that came back to me as I stood before the salt mines of Maras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Search of Salt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1141.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1141.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1141-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1141-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1141-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From legend to reality. <strong>From mythical origins to scientific truth<\/strong>. I\u2019ll set aside, for a moment, the tears and anguish of Ayar Cachi, and focus instead on the factual details \u2014 while still hoping to inspire you to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=1813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Maras salt mines<\/a>, one of the most fascinating attractions in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, on your <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/\">next trip to Cusco<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not a difficult journey \u2014 and <strong>you certainly won\u2019t need to lock yourself in a cave<\/strong> to admire these salt mines, which were formed by \u201can ocean trapped within the mountains thousands of years ago. Through a spring emerging from the heart of the mountain, the water <strong>flows into the 4,200 ponds<\/strong> that the families of the Maras community <strong>work and harvest using ancient techniques<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \u201ctechnique \u2014 as explained on the <a href=\"https:\/\/marasgourmet.com\/pe\/blog\/sal-de-maras\/que-es-sal-de-maras-y-cual-es-su-procedencia\/?srsltid=AfmBOorj1dTxpexW0uNW3L16OBUzBX2Lz9J4xGc0K3bfM3vfAqiysRAO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Maras Gourmet<\/a> website \u2014 has been passed down from generation to generation.\u201d Even today, just as in pre-Hispanic times, <strong>the salt is produced through a manual and artisanal process<\/strong>. The first step is to fill the ponds with the saline water. Excellent for cooking, it\u2019s also <strong>used in aromatherapy sessions<\/strong> and in the production of industrial goods. But that\u2019s not all \u2014 the creativity of the local community transforms it into a variety of <strong>beautiful handmade crafts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet no dish is as exquisite, and no craft as perfect, as the landscape of the salt terraces themselves. You\u2019ll see it when you gaze at the horizon, the surrounding mountains, and the countless small <strong>ponds \u201csculpted\u201d into the mountainside<\/strong>. There are hundreds \u2014 some filled with shimmering water, others already dry. <strong>The salt glistens under the sunlight as the locals<\/strong> \u201charvest\u201d it with a shovel and a sack, creating a mesmerising scene that feels both timeless and alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Road to the Salt Mines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1092.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1092.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1092-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1092-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1092-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eternal tears of Ayar Cachi are today a source of income for the <strong>communities of Maras and Pichingo<\/strong>. They extract and sell the mineral from the pools, continuing the tradition of their ancestors. In pre-Hispanic times, salt was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/peru\/2024\/04\/12\/como-consumian-sal-los-incas-descubre-la-extrana-forma-en-que-se-repartian-este-producto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a highly valued ingredient<\/a> in cooking and food preservation, and <strong>great caravans once crossed the Andes<\/strong> in search of this \u201cwhite gold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Times have changed. Today, no longer do<strong> llama caravans arrive<\/strong> \u2014 instead, <strong>it\u2019s tourists on bicycles<\/strong>, pedalling their way to Maras in an<strong> exhilarating adventure<\/strong> that begins in the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chinchero <\/a>(28 km from Cusco). The route takes around three hours, and local operators organise specialised cycling tours. Hop on one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking for a less demanding option, you can book a <strong>traditional tour<\/strong> from Cusco (3,400 m a.s.l.). Another alternative is to <strong>hire a taxi or take public transport<\/strong>. The journey is relatively short (about 50 km), and if you go with a travel agency or private vehicle, they\u2019ll drop you off and wait for you <strong>at the entrance to the site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1153.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1153.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1153-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1153-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_1153-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you choose to travel by public transport, <strong>take a bus to Urubamba<\/strong> (via Chinchero). When you get on, tell the driver or ticket collector that <strong>you\u2019ll be getting off at the turn-off to the salt mines<\/strong>. From there, you\u2019ll find taxis and shared cars that can take you to the town of Maras, <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=1814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the archaeological site of Moray<\/a>, or the stunning salt terraces. If you\u2019re feeling energetic, you can even walk the final stretch and enjoy <strong>the scenery along the way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you arrive, you\u2019ll need to pay an <strong>entrance fee of 20 soles (foreign visitors) or 15 soles (Peruvian visitors)<\/strong>.
