The situation is different, however, if you\u2019re in Arequipa, Puno or Puerto Maldonado \u2014 cities where night buses depart in the evening and arrive at dawn<\/strong>. That way, you can make the most of your sleeping hours while travelling to your destination and even save a night\u2019s accommodation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip: choose a bus with comfortable seats<\/strong> so you arrive fresh and full of energy. I also recommend travelling light \u2014 carrying only what\u2019s necessary will make your journey to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu<\/a> much easier. This protected area, established in 2019, safeguards both the archaeological site and endangered species such as the spectacled bear <\/strong>and the cock-of-the-rock<\/strong>, which inhabit the surrounding forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve gone off track \u2014 let\u2019s return to Lima to catch one of the early morning flights to imperial Cusco<\/strong> from Jorge Ch\u00e1vez Airport<\/strong> (the first departures are around 5:00 a.m.). After roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes, you\u2019ll land at Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport<\/strong>, ready to begin your adventures. Now comes the next question: where should you start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before revealing the answer, let me offer one last piece of advice \u2014 make a plan<\/strong> that allows you to act quickly. Avoid improvisation<\/strong> and don\u2019t leave anything to chance. It\u2019s essential to buy your train tickets <\/a>and entrance to Machu Picchu<\/a> (among other services) online in advance. Once in Ollantaytambo<\/a> \u2014 where the stone structures of the impressive archaeological park dominate the landscape \u2014 walk to the train station <\/strong>(about 10 minutes on foot). Since you\u2019re a well-prepared traveller, you\u2019ve already got your ticket. Before booking online, make sure to estimate your arrival time<\/a>. A good option is to plan your train departure from 11 a.m. onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour and a half later, you\u2019ll arrive in Machu Picchu Pueblo, where buses depart for the Historic Sanctuary<\/strong> (30 minutes uphill). Remember, every minute you save is a victory<\/strong> in this lightning adventure that started at dawn in Lima or the night before in Puno, Arequipa, or Puerto Maldonado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site,<\/strong> the number of visitors allowed into the llaqta (citadel) is limited. At present, there are three circuits and ten routes available<\/a>, and tourists can enter the llaqta from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For your one-day plan, select the 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. entry time. In both cases, you\u2019ll have a tolerance window of 30 minutes<\/strong> (in low season) or 45 minutes (in high season). The visit lasts roughly two hours<\/strong>, so by around 5:30 p.m. you should be back in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next comes the train ride back to Ollantaytambo<\/strong> (you could depart around 6:00 p.m.), followed by the road journey to Cusco and Velasco Astete Airport \u2014 either by bus or private transport (you\u2019d arrive at around 8:30 p.m.).
