I see many paths in your future. Yes, I see you on winding trails<\/strong> along the slopes of the mountain range and deep in the forests of the High Jungle. Yes, there you are \u2014 no doubt about it \u2014 walking under the protective gaze of the Apus<\/a>, the sacred mountains, stubbornly and steadily climbing towards a mountain pass<\/strong>, then heading down with lighter, renewed steps towards a patch of green that, just a couple of kilometres earlier, felt like a mirage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m no fortune teller or seer. I don\u2019t read cards or coca leaves<\/strong>, but in 2026 I see you walking through the Andes and the Amazon<\/strong> of Cusco<\/a>. Perhaps it\u2019s more a wish than a vision. I\u2019d love for you to leave your adventurer\u2019s footprints on one of the many hiking routes of the so-called \u201cnavel of the world\u201d. There are plenty of them \u2014 more than you might imagine. I know this from experience\u2026 an experience you really should live for yourself!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do it. Make it one of your goals for the year that\u2019s about to begin<\/strong>. There\u2019s time to organise your journey and to get physically prepared if long-distance walking isn\u2019t yet your strong suit. What do you think? You can already see yourself with your rucksack on an ancient path<\/strong>. You can already see yourself camping high up in the mountains or tucked away in a small patch of forest. And you can already see yourself arriving tired \u2014 but infinitely happy \u2014 at the end of the trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just imagine what it feels like to explore the realms of the revered apus Ausangate and Salkantay<\/strong> \u2014 their lagoons, their frozen summits, their thousands of metres above sea level. Imagine the emotions along a route that takes you, in a single journey, to magnificent Choquequirao and on to Machu Picchu<\/a>, the world wonder and the travel dream of millions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you\u2019ll arrive there after eight or nine days of walkin<\/strong>g. Mission accomplished. A truly magical moment. Your unforgettable memory of 2026<\/strong>. Yes, I\u2019ll say it again \u2014 that\u2019s what I see in your future, without reading coca leaves<\/a>. I\u2019m just a traveller wishing you the very best for the New Year, hoping to see you out on the trails of my homeland. Because I\u2019m certain you\u2019ll enjoy them from the very first step<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beginning of the adventure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Waking up early. Shouldering your rucksack. Leaving the room behind. Stepping out into a drowsy city<\/strong>. Shadows and cold wind. Cusco <\/a>at dawn. A van pulling away from the \u201cHistorical Capital of Peru\u201d<\/strong>. Cusco slowly fading into the distance. Inside, passengers chat quietly or try to make peace with sleep. You are one of them. You, like the rest, long to take that first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vehicle moves through valleys<\/a> and mountains, past villages and rural communities. Now the sun shakes off the mist. The horizon lights up with its rays<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019ll have good weather,\u201d the guide announces as the moment to leave the van draws near. Soon, the four- or five-day hike<\/strong> will begin \u2014 taking you to Choquequirao, Ausangate or Salkantay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is usually how long-distance walking adventures begin. An early departure<\/strong>, the drive to the trailhead \u2014 a farming community, a suspension bridge, perhaps a mountain gorge \u2014 breakfast with a hot drink<\/strong> to keep the cold at bay, the guide\u2019s briefing, and a final check of your gear to make sure nothing has been forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, doubts creep in too. Will I manage? Will I cope with the altitude and the cold nights?<\/strong> There\u2019s no turning back now. It\u2019s far too late for regrets. Walk \u2014 that\u2019s what you have to do<\/strong>. Take it easy, no rush, admire the landscape, stop for a photo, and remind yourself that you can always take one more step<\/strong>. That step that will get you to the campsite or the mountain hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You rest, regain your strength, and carry on the next day. Will it be the toughest stage? Who cares. You know you\u2019ll make it,<\/strong> even if your heart is pounding like a drum<\/strong> as you climb towards the abra, the mountain pass. The highest point. The lookout from which you take in the landscape in all its glory. And that\u2019s when it hits you \u2014 every metre walked was worth it<\/strong>. You return to the trail with renewed, determined strides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu<\/strong> is a truly tempting possibility. Everything begins in the village of Cachora (Abancay province, Apur\u00edmac region). This is the most popular route<\/a> among travellers, and the trek usually takes four days and three nights<\/strong>. The days are demanding, as you\u2019ll be descending into \u2014 and climbing out of \u2014 the sheer walls of the Apur\u00edmac Canyon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the way, you\u2019ll find campsites<\/strong> and simple lodges where you can spend the night and enjoy a meal. Unlike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu<\/a>, this path isn\u2019t pre-Hispanic, but don\u2019t let that put you off \u2014 it\u2019s absolutely fascinating. One of the \u201cadvantages\u201d of this adventure is that you don\u2019t need to hire a tour operator, although if you\u2019d like to make things easier, you can always hire a muleteer in the village<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roughly 60 kilometres separate Cachora from Choquequirao<\/strong>, often described as the \u201clast refuge of the Incas<\/a>\u201d. The distance is shorter if you travel by road to the Capuliyoc viewpoint (around 11 km away)<\/strong>, where a tough descent into the canyon begins. Beyond the steep ups and downs, altitude is part of the challenge too \u2014 the highest point reaches 3,050 metres above sea level. So make sure you acclimatise properly before setting off<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entry to the archaeological park costs 60 soles for Peruvians and 70 soles for foreign visitors<\/strong>. Once you arrive, you\u2019ll be struck by its dramatic scenery, its magnificent stone architecture, and its agricultural terraces, where the famous \u201cLlamas of the Sun\u201d stand out <\/strong>\u2014 shapes \u201cdrawn\u201d with white stones on the terrace walls. These figures are unique and sit opposite the Apur\u00edmac Canyon<\/strong>, with the frozen summit of the legendary Salkantay glacier rising in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, if you\u2019re a true all-round adventurer<\/strong>, dare to keep walking all the way to Machu Picchu<\/a> (which can also be reached via the classic four-day Inca Trail)<\/strong>. This is the ultimate challenge. The defining test. A trek that, over eight or nine days, will take you to two of the greatest architectural treasures of the Andean world<\/strong>. Do you feel ready to take on this demanding, marathon-like journey?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The routes of the Apus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Ausangate Circuit and the Salkantay Trek<\/strong> are two more great hiking options in Cusco<\/a>. The trails that circle and approach the apus of the \u201cnavel of the world\u201d lead you into landscapes and cultural settings where physical effort is enriched by Andean spirituality<\/strong>. That feeling adds a special depth to every step and every kilometre you walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salkantay, \u201cthe wild\u201d or \u201cuntamed mountain\u201d<\/strong>, is a giant rising to 6,271 metres. Its exact location is disputed by the provinces of La Convenci\u00f3n and Anta, but that detail matters little on this 70\u201375 km route, usually completed in 5 days and 4 nights<\/strong>. Along the way, you\u2019ll visit Lake Humantay<\/a>, cross the Salkantay Pass (4,600 metres above sea level), and descend into the Amazonian valley of Santa Teresa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience ends at Machu Picchu<\/strong>, which you\u2019ll reach via the Santa Teresa\u2013Hydroelectric route. This is not the case with the Ausangate Circuit<\/a> (Quispicanchi province), a demanding high-altitude trek lasting 4 to 5 days<\/strong> through the domains of the \u201csacred Apu who rules\u201d \u2014 the meaning of its name in Spanish. Located in the Vilcanota range, Ausangate reaches an impressive height of 6,384 metres above sea level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily walks of six to seven hours set the pace of this hiking circuit (around 65 km), taking you past lagoons, valleys and mountain passes that rise close to 5,000 metres<\/strong>. In this way, amid breathtaking landscapes and sometimes harsh weather<\/strong> \u2014 gusty winds, cold nights, unexpected snowfall \u2014 you\u2019ll explore some of the most beautiful corners of Cusco<\/strong>, including Vinicunca<\/a>, the famous \u201cRainbow Mountain\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it isn\u2019t strictly necessary to hire a tour operator<\/strong> to tackle Ausangate or Salkantay, it\u2019s highly recommended, especially if you\u2019re not a seasoned hiker<\/strong>. Having logistical support allows you to forget about the practical details and fully enjoy your Cusco trekking experience<\/strong>, just as the chasquis<\/a> once did \u2014 the tireless messengers of the Tawantinsuyo, the Inca Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
